Any Excel Saga review is destined to start off with a warning. The very name Quack Experimental Anime: Excel Saga is proof that something different is about to be seen. Rikudo Koshi, and Watanabe Shinichi Nabeshin the author and the director, make frequent appearances in character form throuought the show breaking up any sense of contenuity. Every episode seems based in a different genre highschool, sports, horror, sci-fi and is only loosely tied to previous episodes. Plot generation seems impossible as nothing makes any sense.
The series as a whole lines up and makes a parody of almost every anime staple. Some jokes may be missed because the show pokes fun at cultural references that you may not catch if you aren’t familar with them. Thats not such a bad thing though, since much of the show seems to not make sense anyway. You’ll probably never know what your missing. You may find youself watching the show with your finger on the rewind button. The main character Excel talks very fast. Subtitles don’t help much either. If you can’t keep up with her spoken word there is no way you can read all the subtitles. Often Excel is in the background babbling about something while other characters are speaking in the foreground. I’ve heard it said that in the english dub her voice is “grating”, “Obnoxious”, ect. That may be true, but it doesn’t bother me. I think it really fits with excel’s character. Loud and boderline insane…
There are many major characters in the show. Lord Ilpallazo is the leader of ACROSS, and excell’s dream guy. Ausugi Hyatt whom Excell calls Hatchan is her subordinate and quickly becomes her half dead rival. also she’s a martian princess The show is overrun by zany characters like the next door neighbors knockoff power rangers Creepy politicians with twirly mustaches, robot chicks, talking dogs, and Pedro just some mexican guy. All the characters seem to have their own separate stories that are going on concurrently. No semblance of a plot appears for the first two thirds of the series. Despite that by the end almost every loose end is tied together and the ending is rather good.
The show is a bit outrageous and may be too much for someone that isn’t an avid anime fan. Overall I loved the show, but I can see where some may not be able to hack it. Crazy people understand crazy so this show suits me. P.S. Beware of PuuChuu’s
